Centre Val d’Aurelle in France has begun the delivery of advanced radiotherapy treatments using TrueBeam devices.
The first person in France has now been treated using the system from Varian Medical Systems at the hospital.
The TrueBeam platform for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery is a fully-integrated radiotherapy system designed to treat a moving target with speed and precision.
The device features a high-intensity mode, one of six dose levels available to doctors with the TrueBeam platform, for customising dose delivery based on a patient’s specific tumor characteristics.
The TrueBeam system can be used for all forms of external-beam radiotherapy including image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery, intensity-modulated radiotherapy, stereotactic radiotherapy and radiosurgery, and RapidArc radiotherapy.
RapidArc enables image-guided IMRT treatments to be delivered in a continuous rotation of the machine around the patient making it possible to complete treatments efficiently in a short time.

By GlobalDataHospital physics department research head Pascal Fenoglietto said the TrueBeam can deliver dose up to six times more quickly than other treatment devices.
"We considered other systems but it was clear that TrueBeam can achieve the same treatment quality in a dramatically shorter time," Fenoglietto added.
Varian France regional director Youssef Rihane said that the hospital has a history of pioneering radiotherapy treatments, having treated 2,000 patients with IMRT since 2001 including 1,000 with RapidArc.
