Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC), a health facility owned by RWJBarnabas Health in New Jersey, has secured a $30m donation to support its new multidisciplinary facility for cancer care.

The donation was made by Andrea and Anthony Melchiorre, who have now contributed nearly $50m to the five-storey cancer centre’s development.

The Melchiorre family has supported various programmes at the hospital over the past 12 years, including the Cooperman Family Pavilion, Emergency Department and Radiation Oncology.

Andrea and Anthony Melchiorre said: “We know that this new cancer centre, which will bring together the region’s top oncologists with best-in-class services in one dedicated setting, will bring renewed hope to people in New Jersey and throughout the region.”

The Melchiorre Cancer Center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center will cover an area of around 137,000ft² and is being developed with an investment of around $225m.

It is currently under construction in Livingston, New Jersey, and is expected to open next year.

RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey said they are making ‘transformative statewide investments to reimagine cancer care’ across New Jersey.

The Melchiorre Cancer Center and other key projects such as the Vogel Medical Campus and the Jack and Sheryl Morris Cancer Center aim to provide advanced treatments and compassionate care.

CBMC CEO and president Richard Davis said: “When this new centre opens in December 2025, it will serve as the northern hub for RWJBarnabas Health’s oncology services.

“Thanks to donors like the Melchiorres, patients will have access to a full array of medical, surgical and radiation oncology services under one roof.”

CBMC was opened in 1865 and operates as a non-sectarian hospital in New Jersey.

The 597-bed hospital serves more than 34,000 inpatients and 90,000 emergency department patients each year.

CBMC and the Ambulatory Care Center provide treatment and services for more than 250,000 outpatient visits a year.
