Canada’s Ontario provincial government has announced the ground-breaking of Trillium Health Partner’s (THP) new Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre in Etobicoke.

A C$1.3bn ($957.9m) contract was awarded to Canadian construction company EllisDon in February this year for the expansion of this facility.

This expansion will result in a 600,000ft² nine-storey facility, comprising space for more than 350 beds in fully private rooms.

It will enable THP to connect more individuals to specialised care, including rehabilitation services and complex continuing care.

The facility is scheduled to open in late 2029.

THP currently serves more than 1.7 million people annually across its three sites, namely the Mississauga Hospital, Credit Valley Hospital, and Queensway Health Centre.

Construction of the new facility aims to address the needs of the growing population in the Peel, Etobicoke and surrounding regions.

To address this increase, the Ontario government is adding over 600 hospital beds as part of THP’s overall redevelopment strategy.

Besides, the government is carrying out the “Your Health: A Plan For Connected and Convenient Care” initiative.

Under this plan, Ontario’s investments will fund more than 50 health infrastructure projects over the next ten years, amounting to over C$48bn, adding nearly 3,000 new beds.

THP president and CEO Karli Farrow said: “Once completed, The Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre will have space for over 350 beds, allowing us to increase our hospital’s capacity to provide quality health care from Milton to Toronto.

“This milestone brings us one step closer to more beds, shorter wait times, and greater specialisation closer to home.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said: “We are thrilled to break ground on the new Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre, a critical step in making care more connected and convenient in Etobicoke and neighbouring communities.”

In June 2023, THP secured the City of Toronto’s approval to expand its Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre.
