Largest Hospitals in Maryland’s by Bed Size
The Baltimore metropolitan area is home to six of the ten largest general acute care hospitals in the US state of Maryland. The remaining top four hospitals are located in the Montgomery and Anne Arundel counties.
Hospital Management has listed Maryland’s ten largest hospitals based on bed size as of last year, using GlobalData’s research.
1. Johns Hopkins Hospital – 1,162 beds
The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore is by far the largest hospital in Maryland, with 1,162 beds.
Affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, it is the largest of the six hospitals operated by Johns Hopkins Medicine, a non-profit academic health system. The multi-speciality teaching hospital also houses the 204-bed Johns Hopkins Children’s Centre.
Johns Hopkins Hospital is nationally ranked in 15 adult specialities. These are cancer care, cardiology and heart surgery, ear, nose and throat (ENT), diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, geriatrics, gynaecology, ophthalmology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics, psychiatry, rehabilitation, rheumatology, urology, and pulmonology and lung surgery. The hospital is also nationally ranked in ten key paediatric specialities.
2. University of Maryland Medical Centre – 800 beds
The University of Maryland Medical Centre in Baltimore is Maryland’s second largest general acute care hospital, with a total of 800 beds.

4. Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Centre – 463 beds
The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Centre is a 463-bed teaching hospital in Baltimore. It is affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and is the second largest medical and surgical facility operated by Johns Hopkins Medicine.
The multi-speciality hospital is recognised for comprehensive stroke care and advanced hip and knee replacement and spine surgery. It is rated as high-performing in three adult specialities, namely geriatrics, orthopaedics, and neurology and neurosurgery.
5. Holy Cross Hospital – 449 beds
Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Montgomery County, is a general medical and surgical facility and teaching hospital with 449 beds.
It is one of two multi-speciality hospitals run by Holy Cross Health, a member of Trinity Health, which is one of the largest Catholic non-profit health systems in the US.

6. Anne Arundel Medical Centre – 404 beds
Anne Arundel Medical Centre is a 404-bed general acute care hospital located in Annapolis, Anne Arundel County. It is owned and operated by Luminis Health, a non-profit health system based in central Maryland.
The hospital is one of the busiest in Maryland, admitting more than 22,000 patients and performing more than 15,000 surgeries a year.

7. MedStar Franklin Square Medical Centre – 348 beds
The MedStar Franklin Square Medical Centre, located in Baltimore, is a general medical and surgical facility and teaching hospital with 348 beds.
The multi-speciality hospital is run by MedStar Health, a non-profit health system that serves people in Maryland and Washington DC. The hospital admits more than 19,00 patients and performs more than 18,000 surgeries a year.

8. Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Centre – 345 beds
The Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Centre is a 345-bed general medical and surgical facility located in Rockville, Montgomery County. It is the largest of the three acute care hospitals operated by Adventist HealthCare, a non-profit health system based in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
The hospital provides emergency, medical and surgical services across a wide range of specialities. It is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure.
9. Greater Baltimore Medical Centre – 342 beds
The Greater Baltimore Medical Centre is a 342-bed regional community hospital located in Towson, a suburb of Baltimore. It is the flagship hospital of GBMC HealthCare, a non-profit healthcare provider based in Baltimore County.
The medical centre admits more than 23,000 patients and handles more than 52,000 emergency room visits each year.

The University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Centre is a 319-bed general acute care hospital located in Glen Burnie, Anne Arundel County. It is part of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), a non-profit healthcare system based in Maryland.
