US-based Children’s National Hospital and Howard University Hospital (HUH) have expanded their partnership in neonatal care.    

Under the new partnership agreement, neonatologists from Children’s National will provide care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at HUH.

Children’s National is also the paediatric and maternal mental health research partner of Howard University Medical School.

Children’s National’s neonatologist Ololade Okito has been named as the medical director of the NICU at HUH. 

Okito said: “This collaboration will ensure more newborns in the Washington, DC, metro area have an equal opportunity to achieve optimal health outcomes.

While HUH is a Level III NICU offering care for babies born prematurely, Children’s National is a Level IV NICU that offers treatment to nearly 1,000 newborns a year.

At least 50% of the newborns admitted to Children’s National are offered ventilator support, and 30% suffer from conditions that require surgery.
