The cities of New Orleans and Shreveport are home to three and two of Louisiana’s ten largest general hospitals, respectively. The state’s remaining top five hospitals are located in Baton Rouge, Metairie, Marrero, Alexandria and Lafayette.

1. Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Centre – 988 beds
Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Centre in Baton Rouge is Louisiana’s largest hospital, with 988 inpatient beds.
The multi-speciality medical centre is the flagship teaching hospital campus of Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System, a Catholic non-profit health system based in Louisiana. It also houses Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital and the 78-bed Our Lady of the Lake Ascension community hospital.
Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Centre is designated as a Level II trauma centre and rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes, kidney failure, lung and colon cancer surgery, hip and knee replacement, stroke management, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
2. Ochsner Medical Centre – 767 beds
The Ochsner Medical Centre is a 767-bed general medical and surgical facility and teaching hospital located in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is run by Ochsner Health, a non-profit academic healthcare system that operates 40 hospitals and more than 300 care centres across Louisiana, Mississippi and the Gulf South.

The multi-speciality medical facility is designated as a Level I trauma centre and houses 19 state-of-the-art surgical suites. It saw 68,755 emergency visits and 185,609 primary and speciality care clinic visits last year.

It is the flagship medical campus of Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport, a public-private partnership between Ochsner Health and the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Centre Shreveport (LSU Health Shreveport).

5. East Jefferson General Hospital – 407 beds
The East Jefferson General Hospital in Metairie, Louisiana, is a general medical and surgical facility with 407 licensed beds.
Owned and operated by non-profit health system LCMC Health, the multi-speciality hospital handled 38,479 emergency visits, performed 8,586 surgeries and delivered 997 babies last year.

6. West Jefferson Medical Centre – 377 beds
The West Jefferson Medical Centre is a 377-bed general medical and surgical facility in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.
The acute care hospital opened in 1960 and became part of LCMC Health in October 2015. It provided emergency care to 47,079 patients and delivered 1,276 babies last year.

7. Rapides Regional Medical Centre – 362 beds
The Rapides Regional Medical Centre is a 362-bed general acute care hospital in downtown Alexandria, Louisiana. Run by non-profit health system HCA Healthcare, the multi-speciality medical and surgical facility is designated as a Level II trauma centre.
The hospital also houses a certified stroke centre and is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, stroke management and COPD.
8. Touro Infirmary – 360 beds
Touro Infirmary in New Orleans is a community-based non-profit hospital with 360 inpatient beds. Operated by LCMC Health, the multi-speciality hospital handled 27,855 emergency visits and delivered 2,589 babies last year.
The hospital provides a wide range of medical and emergency services, including preventive diagnostics, heart and cancer care, orthopaedics, women’s health, rehabilitation and surgical care. It is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to stroke management.
9. Willis-Knighton Medical Centre – 349 beds
The Willis-Knighton Medical Centre in Shreveport, Louisiana, is a tertiary care facility with 349 licensed beds. It is the flagship hospital campus of non-profit health system Willis-Knighton, which is the largest healthcare provider in north-west Louisiana.
The hospital is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes, kidney failure, colon, ovarian and uterine cancer surgery, COPD, pneumonia, stroke management, back surgery, and knee and hip replacement.
