The Largest Hospitals in Mississippi 2021

The city of Jackson is home to four of Mississippi’s ten largest general hospitals, with the state’s remaining top six hospitals located in Tupelo, Hattiesburg, Pascagoula, Vicksburg, Southaven and Gulfport.

1. University of Mississippi Medical Centre – 722 beds

The University Hospital at the University of Mississippi Medical Centre (UMMC) ranks as Mississippi’s largest hospital, with 722 inpatient beds. Located in Jackson, it is the state’s only academic medical and tertiary care centre.

The state-owned non-profit acute care teaching hospital is designated as a Level I trauma centre. It admits around 27,000 patients and handles more than 418,000 outpatient and emergency visits each year.

UMMC is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, lung cancer surgery and stroke management. Also adjoining the University Hospital is a 150-bed children’s hospital, Children’s of Mississippi, which is the state’s only children’s hospital with a Level IV neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

2. North Mississippi Medical Centre-Tupelo – 640 beds

The North Mississippi Medical Centre in Tupelo is Mississippi’s second largest hospital and the largest non-metropolitan hospital in the US, with 640 inpatient beds. It is the flagship medical campus of North Mississippi Health Services, which operates seven hospitals and more than 50 clinics in north Mississippi and north-west Alabama.

The multi-speciality acute care hospital is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, heart and kidney failure, diabetes, colon cancer surgery, hip fracture, knee replacement, stroke management and COPD.

5. Forrest General Hospital – 547 beds

The Forrest General Hospital is a 547-bed general acute care hospital in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. It is the flagship medical and surgical facility of Forrest Health, which operates a network of hospitals and clinics across 19 counties in south Mississippi.

The full-service, multi-speciality hospital is designated as a Level II regional trauma centre and rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, diabetes, colon cancer surgery, COPD, and hip and knee replacement.

6. Singing River’s Pascagoula Hospital – 435 beds

The Singing River’s Pascagoula Hospital in Pascagoula is a general acute care facility with 435 licensed beds. It is the largest of three hospitals operated by community-owned non-profit health system Singing River in the Mississippi Gulf Coast region.

The medical and surgical facility is designated as a Level III trauma centre and houses a regional cancer, wound care and hyperbaric medicine centre. It is also rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, stroke management and COPD.

7. Merit Health River Region – 361 beds

Merit Health River Region in Vicksburg is a general medical and surgical facility with 361 beds. It is the largest of nine hospitals operated by Merit Health Medical Group in Mississippi.

The multi-speciality acute care hospital is designated as a Level IV trauma centre and provides inpatient, outpatient, diagnostic and emergency services across a wide range of specialities. It is also home to Mississippi’s first accredited chest pain and digital mammography centre.

8. Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto – 339 beds

The Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto is a 339-bed general acute care hospital located in Southaven, Mississippi. It is operated by non-profit health system Baptist Memorial Health Care.

The full-service acute care hospital provides emergency care to 60,000 patients each year. Its areas of expertise include comprehensive heart care, neurology, women’s and children’s health, advanced radiation oncology and rehabilitation services.

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto is also rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, diabetes, stroke management, COPD and pneumonia.

9. Memorial Hospital Gulfport – 328 beds

The Memorial Hospital Gulfport is a 328-bed non-profit public hospital located in Gulfport. It is jointly owned by the City of Gulfport and Harrison County.

The multi-speciality medical and surgical facility is designated as a Level II trauma and primary stroke centre. Its core specialities include emergency medicine, cardiovascular and cancer care, neurology, women’s health, paediatric and orthopaedic services.

Memorial Hospital Gulfport is also home to the region’s only Level III NICU and rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, diabetes, colon cancer surgery, stroke management, back surgery and COPD.

10. Merit Health Central – 319 beds

Merit Health Central is a 319-bed general medical and surgical facility located in Mississippi’s capital city, Jackson. It is one of nine hospitals in the state that are operated by Merit Health Medical Group.

The acute care hospital is designated as a burn centre and specialises in different clinical areas, including cardiology and heart surgery, obstetrics and women’s health, cancer care, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, and behavioural health and general surgical services.
