Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in the UK will incorporate California-based medical technology company Masimo’s advanced health tracking watch into its telehealth and telemedicine initiatives.
The Masimo W1 health tracking watch provides precise and continuous measurements of essential physiological parameters.
Available in the UK as a medical device, the watch integrates with the Masimo SafetyNet remote patient management platform.
The virtual ward programme at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was launched in 2022 as part of a larger telehealth initiative by NHS England.
The initiative aims to facilitate earlier discharge of patients from hospitals to their homes.
Currently, more than 20 specialities within the hospital actively participate in Cambridge’s virtual programme.

By GlobalDataUnder the programme, patients are sent to their home with various Masimo products, including MightySat and wearable medical devices such as Radius PPG, Radius Tº, and now the Masimo W1.
These devices enable continuous monitoring and transmission of vital data to clinicians located at the hospital.
Through the Masimo SafetyNet clinician dashboard, hospital staff can easily monitor the patient’s physiological status remotely, enabling patients to remain under observation from the comfort of their own homes.
The usage of Masimo W1 in medical applications in the US is awaiting FDA clearance.
Masimo founder and CEO Joe Kiani said: “Masimo W1 represents not only the future of personal health but is playing a vital role in the expansion of remote healthcare.
“Built on our decades of expertise developing breakthrough non-invasive medical monitoring technologies, Masimo W1 is designed to aid valued hospital partners like Cambridge in accelerating their virtual hospital and telehealth programmes – ultimately helping to improve patient outcomes while reducing the cost of care.
“We are excited for Cambridge clinicians and patients.”
