Redcliffe Hospital in Queensland, Australia, has launched its upgraded emergency department (ED), which now includes a dedicated paediatric section.
Funded by the federal government, the $10m overhaul aims to provide safer and improved emergency care for children and families.

Separate waiting areas, triage, and treatment spaces, designed particularly for young patients and their families, have been added as part of the revamp.
Redcliffe Hospital ED director Dr Alan Yan said: “Around 20% of emergency department presentations at Redcliffe Hospital are babies and children, equating to more than 1,000 paediatric cases each month.
“We’re excited about caring for them in this new separate section because we know it will provide better care and a better experience for parents, caregivers, and families.
“Providing 12 extra treatment spaces in the ED, and a suitable area for people suffering [with] mental health issues, will make a real difference.

In addition, the upgrade has expanded the ED’s capacity by adding a further 12 treatment spaces.
This includes a mental health lounge for low-acuity mental health patients requiring emergency care.
The new facilities will be supported by additional nursing and medical staff.
The Australian Government’s funding for this overhaul was part of an election commitment made in 2019.
Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said: “Our government is proud to be working alongside the Albanese government to deliver for Queensland families.
“These new treatment spaces will make a big difference to our smallest patients while supporting our hardworking health heroes.
“This year’s record health budget will see more facilities just like this one delivered in hospitals around the state, to deliver the services Queensland families rely on.”
