Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center is set to undergo a major expansion and modernisation project that will nearly double the size of the campus.

The $900m investment is said to transform healthcare delivery in northeastern Pennsylvania and address the growing need for expanded healthcare access in the region.

This expansion will include the construction of an 11-storey bed tower, helping the hospital to become a 100% private-room facility.

In addition, it will expand the hospital’s surgical capabilities, emergency unit, and advanced cardiac care programmes.

The project will encompass approximately 600,000ft², adding over 100,000ft² through the new construction and upgrade of the current hospital.

It is expected to create new jobs and enhance the hospital’s capabilities to align with major academic medical centres.

The expansion will occur in phases, with the new tower expected to open by 2028 and other refurbishment work continuing until 2030.

Geisinger president and CEO Jaewon Ryu said: “Everything we do at Geisinger is about making better health easier for the communities we serve.

“This investment not only represents our commitment to meeting the growing healthcare needs of our community, but further demonstrates our desire to deliver access to high-quality care in the region for generations to come.

“By investing in advanced infrastructure, expanding our facilities, and acquiring the latest technology, we’re assuring that no one needs to leave northeastern Pennsylvania to get the care they need and deserve.”
