US-based healthcare system NYC Health + Hospitals has expanded its Hepatitis C Navigator programme to three additional hospital sites, bringing the total to nine facilities.

The three hospitals included in the expansion are located in Lincoln, Metropolitan and Woodhull.

They were added to the programme to mark World Hepatitis Day, which is observed on 28 July.

The Hepatitis C Navigator programme aims to improve screening and help patients until they are cured.

It will provide treatment for all Hepatitis C patients, with a focus on those diagnosed with substance use disorder, those affected with HIV and those who have been incarcerated or recently released from prison.

The programme looks to identify all patients with Hepatitis C, remove the stigma associated with the disease and guide patients through the treatment process.

To help clinical teams identify patients who are eligible for screening, the health system has implemented reminders in its electronic medical records.

According to NYC Health + Hospitals estimates, 1,500 patients are currently infected by uncured Hepatitis C.

The navigation programme is designed to support these patients and provide information, support services and resources to address individual barriers to treatment and prevent reinfection.

By expanding its navigation programme with more priority on screening efforts, NYC Health + Hospitals aims to help end the Hepatitis C epidemic.

The number of newly reported Hepatitic C cases in New York City has been declining since 2012, with the health system having treated and cured more than 2,000 patients to date.

NYC Health + Hospitals serves more than one million New York citizens a year across more than 70 sites in five of the city’s boroughs.

In October last year, the health system announced an expansion and renovation of space for its Children’s Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CCPEP) in Bellevue.
