The UK Government and the British Medical Association (BMA) have agreed on a deal regarding reforms for Specialist, Associate Specialist, and Speciality (SAS) doctors following months of negotiations.
The BMA will put forward this deal to its SAS members in the following weeks.
The deal is expected to ‘realign pay scales and improve career progression’ in the NHS.
It will also create more specialised roles in the NHS.
According to the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), the deal is expected to address imbalances in pay scales for SAS doctors enrolled under different contracts.
Under the offer, changes are proposed on pay scales for SAS doctors on 2021 contracts, with a further increase of between 6.10% and 9.22%, reported The Standard.

By GlobalDataThis offer comes in addition to the raise provided to doctors as part of the 2023/24 pay review process.
If the offer is accepted, the pay rises will come into effect from January next year and will not have any effect on separate awards decided in the future by the pay review process for the period 2024/25.
The DHSC has also committed to a funding pot of £5m to encourage and support NHS employers to create more specialist roles where there is a requirement.
UK Health and Social Care Secretary Victoria Atkins said: “I value the vital work of SAS doctors and I’m pleased we have been able to make this offer following constructive talks with the BMA.
“If accepted, it will realign pay scales, improve career progression and support the NHS to create more specialist roles, boosting patient care and supporting the workforce.”
SAS UK Committee at the BMA chairwoman Dr Ujjwala Mohite said: “This signifies the immense progress that SAS doctors have been able to make in their fight to restore our members’ value.”
