The Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust has initiated the construction of a new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) in Thurrock, Essex, UK.
The beginning of construction was marked by a ground-breaking ceremony.
Due to open in late 2024, the centre will provide a range of diagnostic test services, including CT, echocardiography, MRI, ultrasound scans, blood tests, lung checks, and X-rays.
Located at the Thurrock Community Hospital site, which is owned by Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, the CDC will offer more than 50,000 checks annually and operate seven days a week.
British construction company Morgan Sindall has been selected as the contractor for the new centre’s development.
The modern and purpose-built centre is designed to expedite access to diagnostic tests and reduce waiting lists.

By GlobalDataThe development of this CDC is part of a UK Government funded national programme to increase diagnostic capacity and create ‘one-stop shops’ for tests, checks, and scans.
Thurrock’s CDC will be the first of several diagnostic centres planned to open in the mid and south Essex region, with additional CDCs to be established in Braintree and Pitsea, as well as Southend.
The project is a collaboration between the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust and the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (MSEICS).
The construction of the new CDC in Thurrock also aligns with the MSEICS’ goals to bring care closer to home, focus on prevention, and transform local services.
Mid and South Essex Integrated Care Board interim CEO Tracy Dowling said: “The range of tests that will be available in Thurrock will mean health issues can be detected earlier, improving the chance of successful treatment.
“The location for the new centre will improve access to diagnostic services, which we hope will be more convenient to them and save them from having to travel to their nearest hospital for tests.”
This January, the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust announced the start of construction of a new CDC at Newmarket Community Hospital in West Suffolk, UK.
