Singapore-based hospital group SingHealth has started construction on its new Eastern General and Community Hospitals (EGH Campus) in Bedok North.
The beginning of the construction work was marked by a groundbreaking ceremony led by Singapore’s Health Minister Mr Ong Ye Kung.
Set to open between 2029 and 2030, the EGH Campus is expected to significantly enhance healthcare services in the eastern region of Singapore.
The EGH Campus will consist of two facilities, namely the Eastern General Hospital (EGH) and the Eastern Community Hospital (ECH).
EGH will offer emergency care and inpatient and outpatient clinical specialities while ECH will focus on continuing and rehabilitative care, including programmes for dementia, palliative care, and medical conditions aimed at improving workability.
Upon completion, the campus will add nearly 1,400 beds to Singapore’s healthcare system.

By GlobalDataLocated next to Bedok North MRT station, the EGH Campus is designed to provide accessible healthcare to residents in the vicinity.
It will incorporate ‘phygital’ elements, a blend of physical and digital healthcare services, to improve care delivery and patient outcomes.
Innovations, such as telehealth, digital twin technologies, virtual and remote medicine, and ambient intelligence, will be integrated to enhance the patient experience, SingHealth added.
EGH Campus will explore rehabilitation methods, including exoskeleton suits and AI-assisted tele-rehabilitation, allowing healthcare professionals to concentrate more on clinical duties and patient care.
It will also provide access to national speciality services through alliances with various SingHealth institutions, helping residents to receive expert care closer to home.
In addition, the campus will support patients in their recovery journey, offering rehabilitation programmes and community resources to aid their return to independence.
This approach also aligns with Singapore’s Healthier SG strategy.
The EGH Campus is also being designed with flexibility to respond to future health crises, drawing on lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic.
The infrastructure will accommodate rapid conversion and scaling to manage emergencies, ensuring the safety and well-being of both healthcare professionals and patients during outbreaks.
SingHealth group CEO Professor Ng Wai Hoe said: “With our One SingHealth approach, patients at Eastern General and Community Hospitals will be able to access SingHealth’s integrated network of clinical specialities, comprehensive spectrum of services, and the wide range of experience of our healthcare professionals.”
