The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and 11 Red Cross National Societies are set to launch a new 60-bed field hospital in Rafah, Gaza to provide essential medical services amidst the ongoing conflict in the region.

This initiative is designed to bolster the medical infrastructure in the region and support the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) in delivering urgent healthcare services.

The field hospital will be equipped to offer emergency surgical care, maternal and newborn care, obstetric and gynaecological services, paediatric treatments, and outpatient services.

It will also have the capacity for mass casualty management and triage.

A team of approximately 30 humanitarian experts, including surgeons, doctors, anaesthetists, nurses, technicians, engineers, logisticians, and administrators, will staff the facility.

Supported by Red Cross Societies of Australia, Canada, Austria, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Hong Kong, Japan, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland, the field hospital is projected to treat around 200 people daily.

As reported by the World Health Organization, only 33% of 36 hospitals and 30% of primary healthcare centres in Gaza are functioning to some extent.

The operational facilities are currently overwhelmed with patients, facing severe health needs, lack of supplies, and an influx of displaced individuals seeking shelter.

The ICRC has emphasised the importance of protecting medical facilities in accordance with international humanitarian law, given the escalating health needs in Gaza.

Teams from the ICRC have previously provided surgical services at the European Gaza Hospital and aided other hospitals with medical donations, assisting thousands of patients since the conflict intensified.

The new field hospital continues the ICRC’s support to healthcare in the region, which spans over 15 years.
