AdventHealth Orlando in the US has introduced the Gamma Knife Elekta Esprit, an incision-free radiosurgery technology for treating brain conditions.
This new system offers outpatient treatment for brain tumours, lesions, and various neurological disorders previously deemed inoperable.
The Gamma Knife Elekta Esprit utilises concentrated radiation beams to target specific brain regions requiring treatment while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue.
Notably, the procedure does not require incisions or anaesthesia, allowing patients to return home the same day.
A skilled multidisciplinary team, comprising a neurosurgeon, a radiation oncologist, and a medical physicist, collaborates to create a customised treatment plan.
They focus on isolating the brain areas for treatment to ensure precision and efficacy.

By GlobalDataAdventHealth neurosurgeon Dr Melvin Field said: “The beauty of Gamma Knife is it can administer a very high dose of radiation to a very small and specific area, and literally within a millimetre or two there’s negligible to no radiation at all. It is the most precise technology in terms of radiation that exists today.”
The Gamma Knife technology is said to have a global track record of over half a million successful surgeries.
The AdventHealth Neuroscience Institute is currently the sole provider of this life-saving treatment in Central Florida.
Since its first Gamma Knife procedure in 1999, AdventHealth has completed more than 5,000 surgeries.
The institution noted that it has consistently invested in technological enhancements to refine treatment accuracy and improve patient outcomes.
AdventHealth radiation oncologist Dr Imran Mohiuddin said: “We are very firm believers in the concept of radiosurgery and the platform of Gamma Knife.
“We’re proud to be the only institution in Central Florida that offers this revolutionary treatment option, and our patients travel from out of state and even internationally to come to our institution to get this care.”
In May this year, AdventHealth commenced construction work on its new ten-storey hospital at 10999 Narcoossee Road in Florida, US.
