SRV Group has announced the signing of a €38m ($40.72m) contract for the construction of a new forensic psychiatry hospital building as part of the Laakso Joint Hospital project in Finland.

The hospital building will be constructed in the Ohkola district of Mäntsälä.

Real estate company Kiinteistöosakeyhtiö Laakson yhteissairaala, the Laakso LATU consortium, the UNITAS consortium and Granlund, along with SRV, signed the contract.

This development is part of the broader €800m project, which aims to enhance healthcare infrastructure without tying up SRV’s equity.

The new contract will add a main building with 772 hospital beds, with operations set to commence in stages starting from 2027.

The single-storey forensic psychiatry hospital building will have a gross area of about 8,000m² and accommodate 56 patients, housing the existing operations of Ohkola hospital.

Construction is expected to begin in the summer, with completion expected in the second quarter of 2026.

SRV unit director Ossi Inkilä said: “The construction of the frame of the northern section of the main building, which began in January 2024, is well underway. Currently, approximately 400 employees are working on the construction site.”

The Laakso Joint Hospital project is on track, with extensive excavations nearing completion.

The project’s success is attributed to the collaborative efforts of future users, including personnel from HUS and the City of Helsinki’s Social Services, Health Care and Rescue Services Division, alongside designers, builders, and the client.

A key aspect of the design process is the creation of model rooms to simulate hospital activities and ensure functionality.

The new buildings in the project are being designed to surpass national energy efficiency standards by at least 10% and comply with the EU Taxonomy for sustainability. Renovations to two existing buildings will also incorporate energy-efficiency enhancements.

The City of Helsinki and HUS jointly own the Laakso Joint Hospital, with Kiinteistöosakeyhtiö Laakson yhteissairaala established to oversee the construction process.
