The South Australian (SA) Government has initiated an A$117m ($78.84m) expansion at Modbury Hospital, aiming to enhance healthcare services in Adelaide’s northeastern suburbs.
As part of this investment, the government will introduce a new cancer centre, additional mental health beds, and a five-storey car park.
The car park area, providing more than 300 new parking spaces, is being constructed as part of a larger initiative to improve patient, visitor, and staff access and convenience.
This expansion includes a new cancer centre with 12 chairs, allowing up to 50 patients to receive treatment daily.
The centre will also offer seven outpatient consulting rooms and three interview rooms to support clinical trials.
In addition to the cancer centre, the hospital will improve mental health services with a 24-bed mental health rehabilitation unit for adults requiring long-term hospitalisation.

A new 20-bed unit will cater to the mental health needs of individuals aged 65 and over.
This unit will have pods for patients with varying dependency needs and include sensory rooms and family visiting areas.
In addition, the expansion is expected to alleviate issues such as ambulance ramping times and the increase in long-term hospitalisations, which are partly due to aged care challenges.
In a statement, Member of Makin, South Australia Tony Zappia said: “Combined with a new Medicare Urgent Care Clinic announced earlier this year by health minister Mark Butler and the Albanese Government’s tripling of the bulk-billing incentive, which has seen bulk-billing rates in Makin increase from 74% to nearly 78%, the Modbury Hospital upgrade will see that people in Adelaide’s north and northeastern suburbs have better access to the healthcare services they need.
