US-based Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has launched a new technology platform, called ‘Apella’, to elevate the experience of patients in the operating rooms.
The new technology uses AI to provide data and insights that help in improving the safety and efficiency of the organisation.
Deployment of this platform is expected to help perioperative teams by providing them with a comprehensive, real-time view of operating rooms.
It will further enable the teams to make better-informed decisions, address immediate needs, anticipate upcoming steps, and plan future procedures.
The technology employs AI, communications, and computer vision to provide predictions for turnover times, case durations, and staffing recommendations.
In addition, it records key moments to detect patterns, pinpoint areas for improvement, and support ongoing learning and training.

By GlobalDataEnhanced scheduling workflows allow teams to better address patient needs promptly, TGH noted.
Tampa General Hospital president and CEO John Couris said: “We have some of the most talented surgeons and clinical teams in the world right here at Tampa General. The question is- how do you make the best better?
“Through innovation and technology such as Apella, we’re giving our teams the tools and information to enhance quality, strengthen safety, and improve patient outcomes. We’re also increasing access for more patients to benefit from the exceptional, academic-based care we offer at TGH.”
The healthcare organisation said that enhanced efficiencies lead to reduced time spent in the operating room, which reduces risks and expedites recovery.
Improved turnover of rooms and equipment also enhances the efficiency of each operating room, allowing TGH to expand access to high-quality surgical care for a larger number of patients.
With a better turnover of rooms and equipment, TGH expects to increase the efficiency of each operating room.
This will eventually enable it to provide improved access to better surgical care for more patients.
