UCSF Health, an academic medical centre based in San Francisco, US, has opened a new medical building at its Mission Bay campus.

The new UCSF Health Bayfront Medical Building, due to start receiving patients on 27 August, will offer primary care, adult urgent care, same-day surgery, and specialty care services.

Set to accommodate more than 130 physicians, this new facility is expected to handle approximately 131,000 patient visits annually, with new patients accounting for around a third of this footfall.

Addition of six new primary care doctors will allow for about 20,000 new primary care patient visits each year.

The facility will offer 15 types of specialty care, 14 operating rooms for outpatient surgery, a physical and occupational therapy gym, a radiological imaging suite, a retail and compounding pharmacy, and a laboratory for blood draws.

Moreover, Bayfront will be home to San Francisco’s largest ambulatory surgery centre, equipped with advanced technology for procedures that do not necessitate an overnight hospital stay.

Of the 14 outpatient operating rooms at the new building, four are dedicated to ophthalmologic care, providing surgeries for cataract, cornea and glaucoma, as well as laser vision correction.

These services are integrated with clinical appointments at the adjacent Wayne and Gladys Valley Center for Vision.

Bayfront Medical Building’s urgent care unit can serve up to 16 patients simultaneously, offering treatment for non-emergency conditions including sore throats, ankle sprains, and ear pain.

The urgent care facility, operating from 8am to 8pm daily, aims to alleviate the burden on emergency departments and inpatient facilities across the city, with plans to extend service hours to 16 hours per day.

Medical specialties available at the new care facility encompass allergy, endocrinology, audiology, gastroenterology, cardiology, physical therapy and rehabilitation, dermatology, ear, nose and throat, rheumatology, hepatology, neurosurgery, pain medicine, urology, vascular surgery, and pulmonology.

Located at 520 Illinois Street

, the five-storey, 181,000ft² facility is accessible by public transport and connected to a new nine-floor parking garage.

The all-electric building has light-filled spaces and features amenities such as lactation rooms and a café.

UCSF Health president and CEO Suresh Gunasekaran said: “The Bayfront facility is all about expanding access to the world-class care that UCSF Health is known for, and making that care as convenient and comfortable as possible.

“This is more than a building, but a delivery on our promise to the community that leading-edge, compassionate care should be available to anyone who needs it.”
