Dronning Ingrids Hospital (DIH) in Greenland has selected Sectra, an international medical imaging information technology (IT) and cybersecurity company, to provide its enterprise imaging solution.

This move aims to bolster cross-country collaboration with Danish hospitals, addressing resource and subspecialty challenges.

It is further expected to help in improving patient care in the region.

Sectra’s enterprise imaging solution will provide DIH with a unified strategy for all imaging needs while also aiming to reduce operational costs.

According to Sectra, the solution’s versatility is highlighted by its scalable and modular nature, which includes a Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA) at its core, enabling healthcare providers to expand their services across various medical ‘ologies’ and enterprises.

Sectra Denmark managing director Sune Henriksen said: “Sharing resources, expertise, and workload between hospitals within a region or, as in this case, even across borders, is crucial in handling the increasing workloads in healthcare and resource shortages.

“Therefore, the sharing of information and images between hospitals should be efficient and easy. It is encouraging to witness collaboration between DIH and hospitals in Denmark. The involvement of Rigshospitalet in Denmark, which went live with Sectra this summer, and particularly the expertise of Chief Radiologist Martin Lundsgaard Hansen, has been helpful in shaping this project.”

DIH, situated in Nuuk, serves as Greenland’s central hospital and supports 15 clinics distributed across the country.

The contract with Sectra was signed in the second quarter of the company’s 2024/2025 fiscal year after receiving a donation from Kirsten of Freddy Johansens Fond.

Initially, DIH will implement the radiology module of Sectra’s solution.

This step is expected to streamline diagnostic workflows and enhance the quality of care for patients by facilitating better collaboration and resource sharing with Danish hospitals.

Diagnostic and therapeutic department manager Cosmus Pyndt said: “The partnerships we have with hospitals in Denmark are highly important to us as we, being sparsely populated, struggle to recruit staff and cover medical specialities locally.

“To deliver care at the speed and quality we want, we need to both increase the efficiency of our internal radiology workflows and facilitate cooperation with healthcare providers in Denmark.

“Sectra’s unified platform enables this by providing easy access to images, data, patient portfolio and necessary tools, along with the ability to efficiently share information.”
