UK-based artificial intelligence (AI) firm, Omnie AI, has launched a device that is designed to provide clear directions and information to hospital visitors and patients.
The York-based company said that its Omniebox uses advanced AI to create an accessible, user-friendly experience for all hospital visitors, allowing them to ask questions in any language and receive a response ina ‘human-like voice’ with the aim of taking the pressure away from staff in having to direct hospital visitors.
The AI-driven device is designed to be easily programable so to accommodate the layout of any hospital or medical facility and can be updated instantly to reflect any changes in the hospital. Research conducted by the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) found that missed appointments are liable to cost the body as much as £162m per year, with 6.9 million outpatient hospital appointments missed each year.
Managing director Damian Edwards said, “Omnie Box was developed to ensure patients can quickly and confidently locate hospital departments, reducing appointment delays and easing anxiety around hospital visits.”
The system effectively works similarly to a chatbot, allowing users to press a button and ask a question which is then run against the AI’s repository of information where a language model will then formulate the answer into a hopefully intelligible sentence for the user, responding in whatever language the question was asked using.
So far AI has saturated almost all parts of the healthcare market, with the technology covering areas from direct surgical assistance to using AI to organise patient and doctor schedules. Research conducted by GlobalData has found that by the end of this year the AI market is expected to reach sales of $93bn in 2023, up 12% from 2022.

By GlobalDataAway from using AI to directly guide patients and visitors to appointments, the technology has found itself at home across the hospital setting. Manchester has recently seen an initiative, backed by 150 general practice (GP) clinics across the city, to drive up lung health diagnoses through the roll-out of a new lung health AI.
