Bell Law Firm and Ilardi Law have announced the filing of a medical malpractice lawsuit against Piedmont Healthcare, Aya Healthcare Services, and registered nurse Lanesia Kierra Martin for negligence in medical care.

This lawsuit was filed by Donald H Huizer and his wife Julie, after an incident that resulted in severe injuries to Mr Huizer following heart surgery.

The civil action, lodged in the State Court of Cobb County, alleges that Donald Huizer, who underwent heart surgery on 9 August 2023, was subjected to improper post-operative care.

This case revolves around the mishandling of the vasopressor medication Norepinephrine, which was erroneously administered in excess by Nurse Martin, leading to a haemorrhagic stroke.

The lawsuit accuses the defendants of multiple instances of negligence, including the mismanagement of the high-alert medication and the incorrect handling of an IV line that resulted in an overdose.

This breach of the standard of care expected of healthcare providers has had dire consequences for Mr Huizer.

Huizers lead counsel Lloyd Bell said: “As a direct result of Piedmont’s negligence, Don has sustained permanent brain damage that has altered every aspect of his life.

“Although Don has tremendous love and support from Julie, his wife of 35 years, and their three daughters, every day is a struggle as Don struggles to speak, regulate his emotions, and function with a severe brain injury.”

The Huizers are seeking both compensatory and punitive damages, citing a blatant disregard for patient safety.

They are also pursuing reimbursement for litigation expenses and attorney fees.

In addition, Julie Huizer is claiming damages for the loss of consortium and companionship, reflecting the impact this incident has had on their family life.

Bell Law Firm said: “We are committed to seeking justice for the Huizer family, whose lives have been irrevocably affected by what we believe to be gross negligence in the care provided at Piedmont Healthcare.”
