The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has concluded the pilot phase of its ‘IMA AMR Smart Hospital Project’, a certification initiative designed to tackle the issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the country.
The project aims to enforce advanced Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) strategies in healthcare facilities nationwide.
AMR is said to be a significant global health concern, with a staggering 4.9 million deaths attributed to it in 2019.
India’s high antibiotic prescription rate, at 412 per 1,000 people, exacerbates the challenge by accelerating the development of resistance among infectious organisms.
In response, the IMA, representing the largest consortium of doctors in the country, introduced the initiative to encourage responsible antimicrobial use and strengthen AMS and IPC measures.
IMA secretary general Dr Anilkumar Nayak said: “Our hospitals are reservoirs of pathogens, making it imperative to implement strong IPC and AMS protocols. With this initiative, we aim to set benchmarks for safe and effective healthcare delivery in the fight against AMR.”

By GlobalDataThe initiative has seen engagement from hospitals across India, including KD Hospital in Gujarat; Sehgal Neo Hospital in Delhi; Mahavir Jaipuria Rajasthan Hospital in Jaipur; and Ananthapuri Hospital and Research Institute in Kerala.
More than 1,700 IMA branches received registration forms, and a meticulous selection process was undertaken to choose participating hospitals from various regions and healthcare settings.
An Accreditation Committee comprising experts was established to maintain quality standards and provide guidance throughout the initiative.
The participating hospitals underwent comprehensive assessments, including initial evaluations, expert mentoring, and final on-site assessments based on a checklist, to ensure they met the stringent criteria set forth by the initiative.
