The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), a US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) agency, has announced an investment of $60m to enhance access to healthcare services by extending the operating hours of 125 community health centres.

This initiative aims to provide more flexible healthcare options for nearly 4.2 million individuals, especially those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicaid.

The funding will enable these HRSA-supported centres to add an average of 20 hours per week, facilitating early morning, night, and weekend consultations.

This expansion is critical for patients facing difficulties in accessing care during traditional business hours, such as those with work or school commitments, limited childcare, or transportation issues.

HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said: “No one should have to delay or skip a trip to the doctor because of work or school. The millions of Americans who can’t miss their daytime work shift, whose kids are in school, who have limited child care, or who face transportation challenges deserve the same access to quality care.

“These investments will help to extend operating hours, especially for patients in rural or underserved communities nationwide. I’m proud to be part of an administration that leaves nobody behind.”

HRSA-supported health centres provide primary care services to individuals regardless of their ability to pay.

They serve over 31 million patients at more than 15,000 service sites in high-need communities, with over 90% of their patients living below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.

HRSA administrator Carole Johnson said: “Today’s action is another example of the Biden-Harris Administration taking action to address the challenges families face in getting health care services.

“Having the option to get to the doctor before or after work or on the weekend not only helps families get the care they need, but it also helps relieve some of the stress and burden on families trying to arrange care. HRSA’s investment is expanding access to care in a way that recognises the day-to-day realities of working families across the country.”
