Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) has announced plans for Roberts Children’s Health, a paediatric inpatient tower in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Due to open in 2028, the tower will have more than 20 storeys and cover an area of more than three million square feet.

It will feature more than 30 procedure and imaging rooms dedicated to neurology, cardiology and other medical specialities.

Roberts Children’s Health will include more than 700 private rooms, each of which will feature technology that connects to the patient’s electronic medical record, streamlining access to test results and communication with healthcare professionals.

Its other facilities will include a Family Amenities Suite, which will offer meditation, fitness and entertainment spaces, as well as easily accessible mental health services.

CHOP president and CEO Madeline Bell said: “At CHOP, we’re focused on finding answers to the toughest medical challenges so that every child has the chance for a healthier future.

“Roberts Children’s Health will greatly enhance the hospital experience for our patients and their families, equip our staff with the latest innovations, and revolutionise how we provide care, all while continuing our long legacy of breakthroughs.”

Roberts Children’s Health’s development has been funded in part by Aileen and Brian Roberts and their family, who have provided the largest single contribution to CHOP in its 170-year history.

Bell said: “We are extremely grateful for the continued generosity of the Roberts family. They have helped propel us to the forefront of paediatric genetics research.

“Now, we’ll be able to translate that research into extraordinary care more quickly and help more children live healthier lives.”

CHOP has also announced enhancement works on its existing hospital on Philadelphia’s Civic Center Boulevard.

In November 2023, the hospital received a $6.4m donation from the Holveck family to fund research in osteosarcoma and other rare cancers.
