MedStar Health’s MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center has reopened its pre-operative surgery and post-anaesthesia care unit (PACU) space following a $3m renovation.
The project involved the transformation of the existing 4,000ft² area into a modern, integrated layout designed to improve healthcare provider collaboration and patient comfort.
This upgrade to the PACU and pre-operative surgical unit marks a shift from a segmented and outdated design to a contemporary and accessible space.
The new layout is structured with pre-op on one side and PACU on the other, facilitating better patient flow and privacy.
The unit now features 17 flexible patient bays, two nurses’ stations, a breakroom, a dictation room, a workroom, and three restrooms, with two designated for patients and one for staff.
Additionally, the renovated area houses medical equipment and technology for care optimisation.
MedStar Health spine surgeon David Weiner said: “For our nurses and providers, this is a game-changer. The improved layout will allow us to be more efficient and streamlined in the way we deliver care.
“I’m most excited about what this means for our patients. This isn’t just about more space; it is about better care, smoother transitions, and a more comfortable experience for those who trust us with their health.”
MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center president and MedStar Health senior vice-president Stephen Michaels expressed that the renovation is part of a broader commitment and investment strategy for the hospital.
Michaels said: “The much-needed renovation of the pre-operative surgical unit and PACU was driven by significant growth in surgical and procedural volumes at MedStar Southern Maryland over the past several years.
“The updated space is an achievement that reflects our ongoing commitment to enhancing patient care at the hospital and in our community.”
