International support services and construction group Interserve has won a contract worth £130m from the Welsh government to refurbish the Prince Charles Hospital located in Merthyr Tydfil, UK.
As part of the final phase of the refurbishment, the company will be responsible for renovating the ground and first floors of the hospital.
This renovation contract has been awarded with an aim to improve patient care and the working environment for staff at Prince Charles Hospital by creating a modern healthcare setting.
Interserve UK Construction managing director Paul Gandy said: “Our excellent track record in delivering projects similar in nature to this one, means we are now considered one of the country’s leading construction companies for healthcare projects and we look forward to starting work and creating a modern and efficient hospital for the people of Merthyr Tydfil and beyond.”
Expected to start this month, the renovation work is slated for completion by 2026. During this time, the hospital will remain operational.
Following the renovation, the departments that are set to benefit are operating theatres, critical care, radiology and outpatients’ services.

Set to provide a significant boost to the local economy, the scheme will see creation of more than 80 apprenticeships with over 60% of the workforce employed from Wales.
Initially, the company secured a £25m contract from Cwm Taf University Health Board in December 2018, as part of the next phase of the £36m redevelopment of Prince Charles Hospital.
