International medical imaging company Sectra’s software for digital pathology and Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA) has gone live at Leeds Teaching Hospitals in the UK.
Leeds Teaching Hospitals is the first of an initial six trusts in the Northern Pathology Imaging Co-operative (NPIC) to implement the software.
Sectra’s technology will support the regional programme which is digitising, connecting as well as applying artificial intelligence (AI) to pathology services in the North of England.
With the new solution in place, professionals will be able to interrogate pathology images electronically from a range of devices.
Furthermore, the new system is allowing pathologists to work more quickly and gain easier access to colleagues’ opinions while managing increasing demand.
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust practicing pathologist Dr Darren Treanor said: “Collectively, we are modernising our pathology services to become among the most advanced and interconnected anywhere in the world, and we hope to share our experience to help others across the NHS and beyond.

By GlobalData“The days of using glass slides and paper notes to determine and communicate a patient’s diagnosis are numbered. As we move to digital ways of working, we can improve quality and create a more structured digital workflow.”
The trust can also use Sectra’s software to pool imaging and build a platform for AI that is key to improving diagnoses for cancer and other illnesses.
More hospitals in the NPIC are expected to go live with the system later this year.
NPIC, a collaboration between NHS, academic and industry partners, is deploying digital pathology across hospitals in the North of England.
Earlier this month, Sectra’s radiology imaging solution went live at the sites at the first two local health districts in NSW Health Care in Australia.
