Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has selected BDP as the main architectural design firm for its £600m Hospitals of the Future project.
The project involves the construction of a new hospital for adults and a new building to house the Leeds Children’s Hospital, which offers children, maternity and ambulatory care at the existing Leeds General Infirmary location.
With the new facilities, the aim is to deliver the latest, personalised healthcare using advanced treatments, technologies, innovation and research.
BDP won the design contract in a global design competition process. The company proposed a circular hospital structure in its initial design concepts.
The company will leverage its clinical and patient pathflow designing capabilities via digital design and new construction approaches such as the use of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) techniques.
BDP is expected to yield a flexible hospital that can cater to modern clinical needs and medical developments of the future.

By GlobalDataThe Hospitals of the Future programme falls under the government’s goal to construct 40 hospitals by 2030, initially supported by £3.7bn.
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust chair Dame Linda Pollard said: “Digital technology and world-leading innovative techniques will be central to the services provided in the new hospitals whilst the old hospital estate will be redeveloped as part of the City’s Innovation District, bringing about direct and wider economic benefits of up to £11.2bn in net present value terms and more than 3,600 jobs.”
The Trust anticipates setting up the new hospitals by 2026. It has partnered with the DHSC and NHS England and NHS Improvement’s joint central team to build the new hospitals.
Meanwhile, WSP will act as the civil and structural designer for the Hospitals of the Future project, while MJ Medical will be the medical equipment advisers.
In June last year, the Trust signed a seven-year managed service agreement with health technology firm Royal Philips for cardiac care.
