UK-based Cardiff University has selected Siemens Healthcare’s magnetic resonance (MR) technology to deploy in its new Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC).
Currently under construction, the £44m centre is being developed to better understand the causes of neurological conditions, including dementia, schizophrenia and multiple sclerosis.
Being operated through a collaboration with Siemens Healthcare, the CUBRIC facility will provide expertise in brain mapping, in addition to the latest in brain imaging and brain stimulation.
CUBRIC director professor Derek Jones said: "The colocation of the 7 Tesla system and the Connectom microstructural imaging system is an extremely powerful combination for probing brain structure, function and biochemistry, allowing us to answer questions that have previously been limited by technology."
The university will install four new Siemens MR systems in the facility in early 2016, including Magnetom 7T, Magnetom Connectom 3T Scanner with 300mT/m gradients and two Magnetom Prisma systems.
To purchase the imaging equipment, the university received support from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Welsh Government.
