Carestream DRX imaging

El Camino Hospital, a nonprofit and locally governed organisation in the US, has installed five Carestream DRX imaging systems to perform portable X-ray exams at its two campuses located in Mountain View and Los Gatos, California.

All DRX-Revolution and retrofitted systems feature high-resolution, wireless Carestream cesium iodide detectors.

At the Mountain View campus, one DRX-Revolution system is used in the neonatal ICU and two others are used in the emergency room and operating room as well as for bedside inpatient exams.

The Los Gatos campus has retrofitted two existing portable systems with wireless DR detectors and these systems are used in all areas of the hospital.

El Camino Hospital imaging operations manager Howard Sanford said that one of the key factors in the hospital’s decision to use the system was its powerful 32kW generator.

"This generator makes it possible to produce better image quality for thicker body parts, such as abdominal exams and lateral lumbar spines, because it can capture these exams with shorter exposure times," Sanford added.

"Shorter exposures also can reduce patient radiation dose and help eliminate patient movement."

Carestream DRX-Mobile retrofit kits are designed to enable hospitals to upgrade existing CR-based portable units with wireless DR detectors for better quality, lower dose and improved productivity.

The Carestream DRX-Revolution mobile X-ray system features a small footprint, good maneuverability and image quality and wireless communication of medical exams, according to the company.

Both hospital campuses also use Carestream’s imaging software, which provides visualisation of tubes and lines as well as pneumothorax (free air in the chest cavity).

In the neonatal ICU, the DRX-Revolution uses the small-format Carestream DRX 2530C detector that fits into a tray located under each incubator.

Carestream’s pediatric software has been designed to offer optimised image processing for seven different pediatric weight/age categories that are linked to exposure techniques.

With the IEC standard exposure index feature, the software enables technologists to verify that each exam is within acceptable range prior to capturing the X-ray image.
