The Government of Queensland in Australia has announced Eight Mile Plains as the preferred site for the new southern Brisbane satellite hospital.

The site selection for the new healthcare facility marks an important milestone in the $265m Satellite Hospitals Program’s progress.

The Satellite Hospitals Program will provide healthcare facilities at Eight Mile Plains, Caboolture, Redlands, Pine Rivers, Tugun, Bribie Island and Ripley.

Queensland Development Minister Steven Miles said: “We promised to deliver seven satellite hospitals in South-East Queensland to take pressure off our busy health system, and today we have secured the seventh site in south Brisbane.

“The Eight Mile Plains Satellite Hospital will provide non-urgent healthcare closer to home for many people on Brisbane’s southside and Logan and it will take pressure off nearby hospitals including QEII, the PA and Logan Hospital.

“It will improve healthcare and support jobs in construction and healthcare jobs in operation.”

Queensland Health and Ambulance Services Minister Yvette D’Ath stated that the new healthcare facilities are expected to provide various services including community health services.

They will also provide ambulatory and low acuity day therapy services such as complex wound management, renal dialysis, outpatient activities, chemotherapy, as well as urgent care for minor injury and illness.

The Eight Mile Plains facility is expected to create more than 100 construction jobs, with over 770 local jobs to be supported by all the seven sites.
