The state of Texas, US, had more than 590 registered hospitals with approximately 78,000 licensed beds, as of December 2021.
Four of the top ten largest hospitals in Texas by bed size are located in Dallas, followed by three in Houston, two in San Antonio and one in Fort Worth. With 1,128 beds, Houston Methodist Hospital is the largest hospital in Texas by bed size.

1. Houston Methodist Hospital – 1,128 beds
The Houston Methodist Hospital is a long-term acute care hospital located within the Texas Medical Center, a medical campus in Houston. It is the flagship hospital of healthcare provider Houston Methodist’s health system that encompasses six community hospitals offering healthcare services to the greater Houston area.
The hospital’s services and specialities include oncology, gastroenterology, cardiology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics and sports medicine, dermatology, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynaecology, transplant services, and palliative care.

Located in Houston, the Memorial Hermann – Texas Medical Center (TMC) was established in 1925 and is the first hospital to start functioning within the Texas Medical Center. It also serves as the primary teaching hospital for the McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).
The Memorial Hermann – TMC is part of the healthcare provider Memorial Hermann’s health system and specialises in areas such as cardiology, orthopaedics, neurology, women’s health, transplant services, and general surgery. It is home to one of two certified Level I Trauma Centre located in the greater Houston area, which provides 24/7 emergency and trauma care to more than 40,000 patients every year.

The University Hospital – University Health is one of the most prominent teaching hospitals in South Texas. Located in San Antonio, it is part of the healthcare provider University Health’s hospital network.

4. Parkland Memorial Hospital – 968 beds
The Parkland Memorial Hospital is Dallas County’s only public hospital and is part of the non-profit healthcare system Parkland Health’s hospital network. It is the primary teaching facility for the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
The hospital is home to an internationally recognised Level 1 Trauma Centre and a certified burn centre. It also houses the county’s first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and is home to the largest Level III NICU in the region. The hospital specialises in the treatment of epilepsy, cardiology, arrhythmia management, orthopaedics, oncology, trauma, women and infant health and geriatric care.
The Parkland Health hospital was originally opened in 1894 and moved to a new 2.8 million-square-foot campus on Harry Hines Boulevard in August 2015. The new campus is twice the size of the original hospital and receives more than one million patient visits each year.
5. Baylor University Medical Center – 940 beds
The Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) is a non-profit health facility in Dallas, Texas. The hospital opened in 1903 and is one of the leading teaching facilities, and treatment and research centres for the Southwest region. It is part of the healthcare provider Baylor Scott & White Health’s hospital network.
The BUMC specialises in areas such as oncology, heart and organ transplant, orthopaedics, digestive diseases, intensive care, trauma, urology, neurosciences, women’s health, labour and delivery, and high-risk infant care.

6. Methodist Hospital – 933 beds
The Methodist Hospital was the first hospital to be built in the South Texas Medical Center. It was chartered in 1955 and opened in 1963. Located in San Antonio, the hospital is part of Methodist Healthcare’s network, which is part of healthcare provider HCA Healthcare.
The hospital specialises in areas such as obstetrics, neurology, bone marrow transplants, orthopaedics, oncology, and emergency care services. It is accredited by the Joint Commission, a non-profit organisation and accrediting body in healthcare, stroke management and care. It is also among the two hospitals to be awarded by the Texas Medical Foundation Health Quality Institute for its highest quality and healthcare improvement.

Located in Houston, the Chi St Luke’s Health Baylor College Of Medicine Medical Center or the Baylor St Luke’s Medical Center (BSLMC) provides patient care and research support. It is jointly owned by the healthcare system CommonSpirit Health and the Baylor College of Medicine and is a part of the CHI St. Luke’s Health’s hospital network.
The BSLMC specialises in areas such as neurosciences, cardiology, transplantation services, oncology, orthopaedics, urology, and digestive disorders. The hospital’s transplant centre is one of the largest in the world and has performed more than 1,400 transplants since 1975.

The Medical City Dallas Hospital is an acute care hospital located in Dallas. It is a part of the healthcare provider Medical City Healthcare’s hospital network that comprises 16 hospitals, 46 urgent care centres, and 12 ambulatory surgery centres in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Located in Fort Worth, the hospital is part of the Texas Health Resources’ hospital network and specialises in oncology, diabetes, neurosciences, orthopaedics, cardiology, wound care, women and infant health, and sports medicine and palliative care.
