The cities of Winston-Salem and Charlotte each house two of the ten biggest general hospitals in North Carolina while the remaining top six hospitals are in Durham, Greenville, Chapel Hill, Asheville, Wilmington and Greensboro.

1. Duke University Hospital – 1,048 beds
The 1,048-bed Duke University Hospital, located in Durham, is the biggest hospital in North Carolina.
The tertiary teaching hospital provides comprehensive diagnostic, medical and surgical services across a range of specialities. It admitted 41,274 patients and saw more than 1.3 million outpatient visits in 2021.

The Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center is a 921-bed general acute care hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

It is the flagship hospital campus of Mission Health, a non-profit health system that operates six acute care hospitals and numerous outpatient centres in western North Carolina. The 800-bed medical and surgical facility is a branch campus of the UNC School of Medicine and is run by Novant Health, a non-profit healthcare provider headquartered in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. 10. Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center – 624 beds
The Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center is a 624-bed tertiary hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina.
It is designated as a Level III trauma centre and became a branch campus of the UNC School of Medicine in 2021. The hospital provides emergency, medical and surgical care across a range of specialities, from breast health, cancer and cardiovascular care to orthopaedics, neurosurgery and respiratory treatment.
