Kenya’s Government has officially opened the Mama Lucy Kibaki hospital in Nairobi, which has been set up as part of the government’s efforts to provide accessible health services to citizens.

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki has inaugurated the health facility that was constructed in collaboration with the Chinese Government, reported CapitalFM.

Commenting on the partnership with China, President Mwai Kibaki said the Chinese Government financed the construction alongside providing medical equipment for the hospital.

“On its part, the Government of Kenya provided the land on which the hospital is built and also financed construction of support works as well as purchase of additional equipment,” Kibaki added.

Since the commencement of operations, the hospital is believed to have served about 200,000 out patients and up to 7,000 inpatients, besides having 3,000 deliveries to its credit.

In addition to offering health services to Wananchi in the Eastern part of Nairobi County, the Mama Lucy Kibaki hospital has reduced the burden on the Kenyatta National Hospital I which serves residents of the region.

During the official launch, President Kibaki advised the Ministry of Medical Services to expand facilities in the hospital, such as inpatient wards, to serve more citizens in future.

“Our Vision 2030 as well as our new Constitution place high priority to the provision of health services to our people. Our mission has been to improve both preventive and curative health services to enable Kenyans [to] engage in productive nation building activities,” Kibaki added.

Chinese Ambassador Liu Guangyuan was quoted by the publication as saying that China continues to enjoy a cordial relationship with Kenya in various sectors, including infrastructure, agriculture, communication, health, education, tourism and human resource development.

China Wu Yi has built the hospital at a cost of KES550m ($6.4m).
