New York’s Top 10 Hospitals Ranked by Bed Size
Five of the top ten general acute care hospitals in the state of New York, US, are located in New York City, while the remaining five are located in New Hyde Park, Rochester, Bronx, Manhasset, and Albany. In addition, the list includes nine non-profit hospitals and one government hospital.

1. Mount Sinai Hospital – 1,139 beds
Located at Gustave L. Levy Place in New York City, Kings County, the Mount Sinai Hospital has the highest number of medical/surgical and special care beds in the state of New York, US.
Founded in 1852, Mount Sinai is one of the oldest and biggest multi-specialty teaching hospitals in the US. It is nationally ranked high in 11 specialties, including geriatrics, cardiology, diabetes, neurology, rehabilitation, orthopaedics, gastroenterology, urology, pulmonology, ENT, and cancer. Its paediatric centre, Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital, is also recognized as one of the country’s best children’s hospitals.
It is the flagship hospital campus of the New York City-based integrated healthcare network, Mount Sinai Health System, which was formed through the merger of Mount Sinai Medical Center and Continuum Health Partners (CHP) in September 2013.
2. Long Island Jewish Medical Center – 1,015 beds
The Long Island Jewish Medical Center located in New Hyde Park, New York, is a flagship hospital of the Northwell Health system. The multi-specialty hospital has 1,015 certified beds, including 108 paediatric and 226 psychiatric beds.

The hospital’s emergency department is designated as Level 1 adult trauma centre and Level 2 paediatric trauma centre. It also has the highest-level hospital designation for neurological trauma, amputations requiring re-implantation, paediatric cardio-cooling, and poisonings.
The Bellevue Hospital Center is operated by New York City (NYC) Health and Hospitals, one of the US’s biggest public health care systems. The hospital is academically affiliated with the New York University School of Medicine.
4. Strong Memorial Hospital of the University of Rochester – 886 beds
The Strong Memorial Hospital of the University of Rochester is a teaching hospital located at Elmwood Avenue in Rochester, New York.
The hospital is designated as a comprehensive stroke centre, Level 1 adult and paediatric trauma centre, and regional perinatal centre. It also houses the only dedicated burn centre as well as the only paediatric and psychiatric emergency facilities in the region.
Strong Memorial Hospital is renowned for specialities including organ transplant, trauma and burn care, neonatal intensive care, neuromedicine, cardiology and oncology.
5. NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center – 862 beds
The New York Weill Cornell Medical Center of the NewYork-Presbyterian healthcare system has a bed capacity of 862, of which 427 are medical/surgical beds and 85 are intensive care beds.
Located in New York City, the hospital is designated as a Level 1 adult trauma and Level 2 paediatric trauma centre, as well as burn centre and primary stroke and regional perinatal centre.
The multi-specialty teaching and research hospital is affiliated with Weill Cornell Medicine, the medical school of Cornell University.
6. NYU Langone Hospitals – 844 beds
The NYU Langone Hospitals at Manhattan in New York City have 844 beds, including 409 medical/surgical and 161 intensive care beds.
The multi-specialty hospital is designated as a comprehensive stroke and regional perinatal centre. It provides inpatient care for a wide range of medical conditions starting from the brain and nervous system disorders to skin and cosmetic conditions.

7. Montefiore Hospital (Moses Campus) – 816 beds
The Montefiore Hospital (Moses Campus) in Bronx is the biggest hospital campus of Montefiore Health System. It has 816 certified beds, including 581 medical/surgical beds and 116 paediatric beds.
Apart from being designated as AIDS and comprehensive stroke centre, the hospital provides inpatient medical care across various specialties for children and seniors.
The Montefiore Hospital (Moses Campus) is also home to Montefiore Einstein Center for Transplantation, Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care, and Children’s Hospital at Montefiore.
8. Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital – 799 beds
The Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital is a general medical and surgical facility located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side in New York City. The multi-specialty teaching hospital has 799 beds, including 499 certified surgical/medical beds and 92 psychiatric beds.
Designated as AIDS and comprehensive stroke centre, Mount Sinai Beth Israel is known to provide high-quality medical care for gastrointestinal diseases, chemical dependency, psychiatric disorders, pain management and palliative care.
The hospital was founded in 1889. After becoming a part of the Mount Sinai Health System in 2013, the Mount Sinai Beth Israel facility has expanded its services in cardiology, oncology, neurology, orthopaedics and ambulatory surgery.
9. Albany Medical Center Hospital – 766 beds
The Albany Medical Center Hospital, located on New Scotland Avenue, Albany, New York, has a total of 748 beds, including 431 medical/surgery beds, 60 intensive care and 39 maternity beds.
It is designated as Level 1 adult trauma and Level 2 paediatric trauma centre, as well as comprehensive stroke and regional perinatal centre.
The multi-specialty medical centre is a flagship hospital campus of Albany Med Health System, a non-profit health system serving northeastern New York and western New England. Albany Med Health network was created by Albany Med, Columbia Memorial Health, and Saratoga Hospital in 2020.
10. North Shore University Hospital – 756 beds
The North Shore University Hospital, located at Manhasset in Nassau County is one of the best and biggest hospitals on Long Island, New York, with a certified bed size of 756 that includes 486 medical/surgical beds and 97 intensive care beds.
North Shore University Hospital is a part of the Northwell Health system. The hospital is designated as AIDS, Level 1 adult trauma, comprehensive stroke and regional perinatal centre.
It is renowned for its expertise in cardiac surgery, neurology and neurosurgery. The North Shore University Hospital is also designated as a renal transplant centre.
