Humana’s healthcare arm, CenterWell, has announced plans to open 23 senior-focused primary care centres at Walmart Supercenter retail stores across four US states.

The centres will operate under the CenterWell Senior Primary Care and Conviva Care Centers brands in Florida, Georgia, Missouri and Texas.

They aim to provide accessible primary care services for older adults in these communities.

CenterWell said the facilities will be located next to Walmart stores in spaces previously occupied by Walmart Health.

The company expects them to be fully equipped and operational by the first half of next year.

Financial details of the lease agreement have not been made public.

CenterWell president Sanjay Shetty said: “CenterWell is committed to providing seniors with high-quality healthcare that is accessible, comprehensive and, most of all, personalised.

“We are excited by the unique opportunity to lease space from a world-class community partner such as Walmart and offer seniors in these four states greater access to our integrated approach to care.”

CenterWell Senior Primary Care and Conviva Care Centers are part of Humana’s Primary Care Organization.

As of 31 March this year, the organisation delivered care to around 318,000 older adults across nearly 300 centres in 15 US states.

Each facility will be staffed by a team of board-certified physicians, nurse practitioners, medical assistants, care coaches, social workers, behavioural health specialists and clinical pharmacists.

These teams are committed to addressing the comprehensive medical and social requirements of older adults by developing patient-centred and evidence-based care plans.

Walmart Health & Wellness executive vice-president Brian Setzer said: “We are looking forward to welcoming CenterWell into these purpose-built healthcare spaces to offer quality care to communities in four states.

“Leasing these spaces to a well-known and successful healthcare delivery organisation is a win for customers and patients, as we continue to focus on our core health and wellness business of pharmacy and optical.”
