The Government of Alberta, a province in Canada, has awarded a construction manager contract to Clark Builders for the redevelopment of the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.

In the coming three years, the Alberta Government, as part of its ‘2024 Capital Plan’, is allocating approximately C$810m ($589.9m) for this redevelopment project, which represents an overall investment of C$1.806bn.

Initial site preparations have already begun, with Shunda Consulting and Construction Management hired in June this year, overseeing the early construction activities.

Clark Builders, who was selected after a competitive procurement process, will be responsible for the development of the new patient tower, as well as the expansion and renovation of the current Red Deer hospital building.

The contractor will handle preliminary site preparations, including the demolition of the current Annex building and the surface parking lot.

Following the completion of preliminary works, the company will then commence the final construction on the new patient tower by next year.

At the same time, revamp works will start in designated areas of the current facility while ensuring minimum disruptions to the hospital operations.

Alberta Infrastructure Minister Pete Guthrie said: “This construction contract award is a significant milestone in moving the Red Deer Hospital project forward. To this point, all the work, the planning, design, and procurement, propelling the project forward has been behind the scenes.

“Now, everyone will see the physical work as contractors set up offices, equipment, fencing, and signage on site. I am excited to see progress on this project and for the people of Red Deer.”

In addition, as part of the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre redevelopment, a new ambulatory building will be constructed as a separate project through a public-private partnership.

A contract with the chosen organisation is anticipated to be finalised by May next year, with construction expected to commence shortly after.

According to the Alberta Government, the latest redevelopment effort will ensure that residents in the Red Deer region receive timely and accessible care.

This project aims to both expand and modernise the hospital’s existing facilities, featuring various upgrades, including the addition of 200 inpatient beds, an enlarged emergency room, and setting-up six new operating rooms.

In addition, the project will introduce a new Medical Device Reprocessing department, a new centralised power plant, and cardiac catheterisation labs.
