WellSpan Health, in partnership with small-format hospital developer Emerus, has initiated the construction of a new multi-faceted medical campus in Pennsylvania, US.
Situated in the South Middleton Township, the new Carlisle Hospital & Medical Campus is expected to enhance healthcare accessibility in Cumberland County, which is said to be one of the state’s rapidly growing counties.
It will feature a hospital, surgery centre, and medical office building, which will be home to both primary and speciality care practices.
The ambulatory surgery centre and medical office building, to be constructed adjacent to the hospital, will house four operating rooms and offer a full range of diagnostic services, including imaging and laboratory tests.
Some of the common surgeries that will be offered at this centre include cosmetic surgeries, biopsies, tumour removals, and hernia repairs.
Expanded primary and speciality care services will also be a feature of the new campus, including neuroscience and plastic surgery. These services will complement existing cardiology, ENT, and urology services in the area.

By GlobalDataWellSpan Internal Medicine-Wilson Street and WellSpan Family Medicine-Carlisle will relocate to the new campus, consolidating care in a single location.
This campus will include an emergency department and ten inpatient beds and will operate round-the-clock.
The smaller format of the new hospital is intended to streamline services, allowing patients to be seen, treated, and discharged more quickly than at larger hospitals.
The opening of the health campus is expected by late next year.
WellSpan Health vice-president and regional chief medical officer Dr Tim Switaj said: “WellSpan is stepping up to address this forecasted provider and physician deficit and we are committed to being a trusted partner when it comes to new and improved healthcare options in your backyard.”
This development is part of WellSpan’s broader strategy, which includes the construction of three hospitals over the next two years, including sites near Shrewsbury and in Newberry Township.
In April, Emerus and WellSpan broke ground on the new Shrewsbury hospital in Pennsylvania.
