The state Government of Queensland in Australia has announced the opening of the newly redeveloped emergency department (ED) at Nambour General Hospital.  

The ED has been established as part of the state government’s plan to deliver enhanced healthcare services to the Sunshine Coast community.

Following the redevelopment, the Nambour General Hospital ED now features 12 additional beds to help healthcare staff members in managing the rising numbers of presentations. 

The ED now has three resuscitation bays, along with a total of 44 beds, including short stay, acute care, and ‘fast-track’ beds.  

It also has a separate acute care zone for treating children.

The newly upgraded triage area now has private assessment rooms, which are crucial for optimising patient flow and providing greater privacy when required.  

This expansion marks the final phase of the Nambour General Hospital redevelopment, joining previously completed facilities, such as the new same-day rehabilitation unit, medical imaging department, and mental health wards. 

Nambour General Hospital’s redevelopment has nearly doubled the bed capacity to 255, addressing the increasing healthcare needs of the Sunshine Coast.  

Since its opening on 12 June, the new ED has treated more than 8,500 patients, including 1,000 children.  

The latest improvement work was performed as part of Queensland’s Health Big Build, which is set to add more than 3,300 additional hospital beds, with 199 beds in 2023 and another 239 this year. 

Queensland Health, Mental Health and Ambulance Services Minister and Women Minister Shannon Fentiman said: “This upgrade is part of our government’s $86m investment into redeveloping the Nambour General Hospital, which has almost doubled the number of beds from 137 to 255. 

“Our government is committed to delivering worldclass health services, closer to home, and hiring more frontline health workers here on the Sunshine Coast and across the State. 

“When the LNP were in, they fired around 80 health staff on the Sunshine Coast, including 64 nurses.  

Since they left in 2015, we’ve hired more than 2,652 health staff across the Sunshine Coast, including more than 1,500 midwives and nurses, 500 doctors, and almost 120 ambulance officers.”
