Gifford Health Care, a community hospital located in the US, has announced the appointment of Michael Costa as its new president and chief executive officer (CEO).

Costa is currently the CEO of Northern Counties Health Care and will step into his new role at Gifford on 14 October, following the retirement of Dan Bennett on 11 October.

Costa has previously served various leadership roles within the healthcare sector, including his position as the deputy commissioner for the Department of Vermont Health Access and as deputy director of health care reform for the State of Vermont.

His decision to join Gifford was influenced by the hospital’s structure, its people, and the potential to promote significant improvements in rural healthcare, Gifford stated.

Upon taking office, Costa’s immediate focus will be to engage with the team and community.

He will be responsible for developing shared goals and a long-term plan to ensure the hospital’s continued growth.

Costa said: “Gifford is a truly unique organisation, a hospital, Federally Qualified Health Centre, and retirement community, that deeply reflects the health care needs of our community. This role offers an extraordinary opportunity to lead in rural health care and to model how to provide high-quality services while improving community health in a sustainable way.”

Costa’s background also includes a period as special counsel and director of policy, outreach, and legislative affairs for the Vermont Department of Taxes, and as the Blue Ribbon Tax Structure Commission director for the Legislative Joint Fiscal Office.

Apart from this, Costa serves on several boards, including as a trustee of the Vermont Association of Hospitals and Health Systems, as Bi-State Primary Care Association director, and VNAs of Vermont director, among others.

Gifford board vice-chair and CEO search committee lead Megan Cicio said: “Michael is a great fit for Gifford and our supportive, community-focused culture.

“He brings to Gifford deep experience not only in health care administration but also in Vermont state government. He has demonstrated a clear commitment to rural health care and working to ensure organisations that deliver that care, like Gifford, thrive well into the future.”
