Goulburn Base Hospital in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, has introduced the Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) service to provide more women and their families with consistent midwifery care throughout their pregnancy journey.
Women will receive care by a familiar midwife throughout their pregnancy, labour, delivery, and the postnatal phase, under the MGP model.
NSW health minister Ryan Park said: “With the introduction of the new MGP model in Goulburn, we are increasing the number of women who will be able to access midwifery continuity of care. The model provides midwives with renewed opportunities to use their clinical practice skills to achieve better outcomes for women and their families.”
Women Minister Jodie Harrison said: “Midwives put women and the family at the centre of care and the heart of every decision, empowering women to be genuine partners in their care and improving their care experience.
“With the expansion of the Midwifery Group Practice model to Southern NSW, we are increasing the number of women who will be able to access midwifery continuity of care.”
A secondary midwife supports the primary caregiver, ensuring continuity and collaborative care with obstetricians when necessary.
