The Guthrie Clinic and Binghamton University have signed a new collaborative research agreement (CRA) aimed at streamlining research initiatives to improve local community health outcomes.

The CRA sets out standardised guidelines for research projects between the two parties, focusing on compliance and cybersecurity to protect shared data.

These guidelines remove the necessity for repeated contract evaluations, expediting the initiation of research projects and encouraging collaboration.

During a press conference on 13 December, Binghamton University president Harvey Stenger and Guthrie Clinic president and CEO Edmund Sabanegh signed the research agreement.

Stenger said: “I’m excited about this new understanding, both as a way for our researchers to advance their work and to accentuate the care that Guthrie provides to its patients”.

Sabanegh said: “This partnership represents the best of what two respected organisations can achieve when they work together.

“This agreement allows us to collaborate more effectively, opening the door for greater innovation. It creates a solid framework to focus on meaningful research that can make a real difference in people’s lives.”

The partnership’s scope reaches beyond healthcare research, with potential projects spanning process improvement, engineering, and other areas.

This multidisciplinary approach aims to foster innovation and practical improvements across various fields.

By combining resources, Guthrie Clinic and Binghamton University intend to undertake essential research that could lead to new healthcare practices and technological advancements.

Guthrie’s recent expansion into Broome County through the acquisition of Lourdes Hospital enhances the potential impact of the agreement by providing Binghamton University with direct access to a broader network of specialists and clinical expertise.
