The Guthrie Cortland Medical Center in New York, US, part of health care system Guthrie, has commenced Phase 3 of its emergency department (ED) renovation, marking another milestone in the 18-month project aimed at modernising patient care facilities.

This phase 3 renovation will see the addition of three behavioural health patient rooms and an activities room.

It introduces a space for the behavioural health population, providing a separate area for patients awaiting inpatient beds.

The project also includes the construction of two bathrooms and the conversion of three curtained patient areas into private rooms, for patient privacy.

The renovation has already seen Phase 2, featuring an upgraded ambulance bay with a new decontamination shower, the refurbishment of two existing ED patient rooms, and a private isolation room.

Due to the ongoing construction, foot traffic within the hospital will be affected.

A hallway linking the ED entrance to the main hospital will be closed, necessitating changes in entry points for different patient groups.

ED, pulmonology, and cardiology patients and visitors are now directed to use the ED entrance while all other visitors should use the main entrance of the hospital.

To facilitate access to hospital laboratory services, which previously used the ED entrance, draw stations have been temporarily relocated to the former Coffee Shop area in the main entrance lobby.

Incorrect entry through the hospital during this phase will require them to exit and re-enter through the correct entrance to reach their destination.

In December last year, Guthrie celebrated the opening of the Guthrie Cortland Renzi Health Campus to enhance healthcare facilities for the Cortland community in New York, US.
