Canada’s Ontario Government has announced an investment of nearly C$15m ($10.54m) to expand the haemodialysis capacity at Scarborough Health Network’s general and centenary sites.
This initiative aims to provide the residents of Scarborough with better access to essential renal care services.
The funding is set to support the renovation of existing spaces to house a total of 27 new haemodialysis stations, with 21 planned for the centenary site and six for the general site.
Health Minister and Deputy Premier Sylvia Jones said: “This investment will enable more people in Scarborough and the GTA to connect to vital renal care in their community, when they need it, for generations to come.”
The expansion is expected to bolster SHN’s Regional Nephrology Program, which is designed to address the increasing demand for dialysis services in the region.
It will also ensure the ongoing needs of patients, as well as their families in Scarborough are met both now and in the future.

By GlobalDataThe SHN’s Regional Nephrology Program currently provides both conventional and nocturnal haemodialysis treatments to more than 6,000 patients annually.
It is among the 26 regional clinics in Ontario that specialise in comprehensive kidney disease care.
Dialysis is a critical treatment for patients whose kidneys are no longer able to cleanse the blood effectively.
It helps eliminate waste products such as excess salt and water and assists in controlling blood pressure.
Scarborough North member of provincial parliament Dr Raymond Cho said: “This latest investment in renal care is yet another landmark health care investment by our government in Scarborough to improve access to vital life-sustaining care for patients in need.”
SHN manages three hospitals and several community-based sites, delivering vital services to over 850,000 people in the eastern part of the Greater Toronto Area.
These services encompass emergency care, diagnostic imaging, surgical procedures, and rehabilitation support.
