San Francisco, California-based healthcare technology company Augmedix has announced a partnership with HCA Healthcare to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled ambient documentation.
The AI-enabled ambient documentation products are aimed at acute care professionals and aid in streamlining workflows at hospitals.
These AI tools can convert natural conversations between a doctor and a patient into medical notes.
Doctors and nurses will be able to refer to these notes and then transmit them to the electronic health record in real-time.
By making the documentation process simpler, nurses and doctors will have more time to interact with patients.
HCA Healthcare is currently conducting a pilot study to assess the automatic speech recognition and natural language processing algorithms of Augmedix in emergency rooms in two hospitals.

By GlobalDataIt intends to extend the pilot to emergency rooms in two more hospitals in H1 2023.
To assess the possibility of implementation at other HCA Healthcare institutions, HCA Healthcare intends to collect data during the pilot, including crucial feedback from doctors, nurses and patients.
As part of this collaboration, HCA Healthcare will also invest money in Augmedix, which will in turn help it accelerate AI-focused R&D efforts to create completely automated ambient documentation products that work in the complex acute care environment.
HCA Healthcare care transformation and innovation department senior vice-president Michael J Schlosser said: “We are excited to partner with Augmedix to develop ambient documentation in the acute care setting.
“This technology has the potential to revolutionise the way documentation occurs at the point of care, and this partnership and investment is part of our broader strategy to use technology to support our physicians and nurses and enhance patient care.”
Augmedix chief executive officer Manny Krakaris said: “HCA Healthcare is a leader in deploying healthcare technology to improve patient outcomes and support physicians and nurses, and as such they represent an ideal partner for Augmedix to deliver our innovative products to the industry at scale.
“As we continue to enhance our product offerings to best satisfy the needs of patients, nurses and physicians, we look forward to helping HCA Healthcare transform clinical documentation in the acute care setting.”
