The University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, has been selected as the preferred site for a new joint hospital that will serve the Waterloo-Wellington region and beyond.

This development is a collaborative effort between St. Mary’s General Hospital and Grand River Hospital, aimed at bringing advanced healthcare services closer to the community.

The Ontario Government has committed C$5m ($3.6m) to support the initial stages of planning and construction, with the goal of connecting more patients to convenient care near their homes.

Located on the University’s lands west of Bearinger Road and Hagey Boulevard, the new hospital will be conveniently accessible to residents in the surrounding areas.

The planned acute care facility will provide a range of services, including emergency care, critical care, and maternal and newborn care.

Additionally, it will house modern medical and surgical inpatient units, cardiac clinics, diagnostic services, medical imaging, and enhanced surgical spaces.

Occupying approximately 60 acres in the David Johnston Research + Technology Park, the hospital’s location on the University’s North Campus is set to foster a symbiotic relationship between the University and healthcare providers.

Waterloo’s researchers have already established strong ties with hospitals throughout Ontario, and this project is expected to further solidify these partnerships, the University stated.

The planning process between the University of Waterloo and the two hospitals is currently in progress, with the opening of the new hospital anticipated in 2035.

This facility is a key component of the Ontario government’s “Building the Future of Care, Together” initiative, which is focused on meeting the healthcare needs of the region.

Currently, the merger of Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital into a unified entity is in process and is expected to be completed by spring next year.

In parallel, redevelopment efforts are ongoing at the existing hospital sites, alongside the planning and design for the new hospital.

Ontario Deputy Premier and Health Minister Sylvia Jones said: “Now we are here to celebrate the new site of the future University of Waterloo hospital campus that will continue to expand access to key services and add more beds addressing the needs of your growing community, to ensure families across the region can connect to the care they need from now and for decades to come.”
