The board of AIG Hospitals, based in Hyderabad, India, has approved an investment of Rs8bn ($92.3m) to enhance cancer treatment with the installation of a proton therapy system.

The hospital chain has entered into an agreement with IBA, a Belgian company specialising in proton therapy solutions, to procure the Proteus ONE Proton Therapy System equipped with DynamicARC technology, reported The Economic Times Healthworld.com

Proton beam therapy is at the forefront of radiation treatments and is known for its precision in targeting tumours while preserving surrounding healthy tissues.

This advanced technology is particularly beneficial for complex cancer cases and is instrumental in treating patients with tumours located near vital organs.

The Proteus ONE system, featuring DynamicARC, introduces an innovative approach to proton therapy delivery. This installation is claimed to become the ‘first of its kind’ in South-East Asia.

AIG Hospitals chairman Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy was quoted by The New Indian Express saying: “The acquisition of the Proton Beam Therapy System and the strategic partnership with IBA represent a transformative step forward in our mission to provide cutting-edge, compassionate care.”

He added that the Proteus ONE Proton Therapy System is set to be integrated into a new 300-bed oncology centre currently under development at the Gachibowli campus of AIG Hospitals.

This centre is designed to offer comprehensive cancer care.

With this move, AIG Hospitals will become the third proton therapy centre in India, and the first in the South Indian state of Telangana.

Earlier in 2023, the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology unit of AIG Hospitals deployed the OS-Ultra high-speed digital pathology solution from OptraSCAN.
