Inova Health System has selected Care Connect clinical alerting solution of Spok, a wholly owned subsidiary of healthcare communications provider Spok Holdings, for priority clinical alarms.
This solution enables to send alarm notifications to healthcare-grade mobile devices of clinicians from nurse call and patient monitoring systems
A five-hospital health system, Inova serves over two million people annually across Washington, D.C. metro area and beyond.
Spok clinical alerting is installed at Inova Fairfax Hospital, and will be rolled out systemwide in 2019, thereby covering over 2,500 users.
Inova Fairfax Hospital pediatrics project manager Jill Briggs said: “We were already using Spok in a variety of ways for clinical communication within Inova, and we knew we had a solid, reliable platform to build on.
“Across multiple critical care units, Spok enables us to take an enterprise approach to alarm management. We are preventing alarm fatigue with technology that adapts to our workflows to eliminate ‘nuisance alarms’ and improve patient safety.”

By GlobalDataThis clinical alerting solution integrates with Inova nurse call systems – Rauland Responder 5 and Hill-Rom NaviCare, in addition to patient monitoring network of bedside devices.
Spok allows Inova to customise alarm management for each clinical unit.
Features such as assignment sync, patient identification, workflow rules, keyword logic, and unique tones for different patient events enable right clinicians to get the alerts on Inova-issued Spectralink clinical smartphones.
Furthermore, due to automated escalations, audit trails, and analytics, timely response to those patients in need becomes feasible.
Inova biomedical information systems manager Rebecca Arthur said: “Spok works very well with the other systems our care teams use communicate.
“That level of interoperability means technology adapts to our workflows, rather than the other way around, and provides timely information to the caregiver in order to make more informed care decisions.”
Inova clinicians receive the alerts on Spectralink PIVOT 87-Series clinical smartphones.
Inova chose Spectralink, a Spok partner, for the seamless integration of Spok solution with EHR system, Epic.
PIVOT was chosen because of its screen size and rugged durability.
Spok CEO Vincent D. Kelly said: “Inova has worked diligently to develop a unified communication system, and Spok is proud to be the platform that supports their vision.
“Intelligent clinical alerting combats alarm fatigue and reduces clinician burnout, which are two top challenges for healthcare today.”
